In 1990, the total irrigated area worldwide was estimated at 235 millions hectares. Nearly a third of the world agricultural production was produced on irrigated lands. The FAO estimates that 80% of food requirements of the world population will be covered by irrigated agriculture in 2025.

Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) is a management method for improving productivity and sustainability of irrigation systems. PIM refers to the participation of irrigation users in all aspects and all levels of irrigation management. "All aspects" includes the initial planning and design of new irrigation projects or improvements, as well as the construction, supervision, and financing, decision rules, operation, maintenance, monitoring, and evaluation of the system.

As many irrigation systems were initially designed and operated by government agencies, a transfer of responsibilities to private organizations (such as water users' associations) is now taking place. This process, known as Irrigation Management Transfer (IMT) includes all or partial transfer of management functions. It has been initiated in more than 40 countries worldwide and is a generic denomination for a wide range of policies and/or strategies aimed at reducing the role of governments in the management of irrigation systems, engendering a corresponding expansion of the role of water users.

The objective of this site is to present a number of PIM and IMT experiences. The site is divided in 2 areas:

Organisations: You will find here a list of organisations working on PIM or IMT, classified by type (research centres, universities, NGOs, etc.). A brief description of activities is presented, together with links to web sites.
Documents: Here are listed some documents (articles, books, software, etc.), classified by subject (management turn over, gender issues, allocation rules, by-laws, etc.). A brief description of the content of the documents is presented, together with the link where the complete document can be downloaded or ordered.
Projects: list of ongoing or completed projects and studies on PIM and IMT (under construction)
