Brief description of organisations

    Name

International Water Management Institute

Mission   To contribute to food security and poverty eradication by fostering sustainable increases in the productivity of water through better management of irrigation and other water uses in river basins.

Description   IWMI conducts a worldwide research and capacity building program to improve water resources and irrigation management through better technologies, policies, institutions, and management. Scarce and polluted water supplies have their greatest impact on poor people, especially women and children. Improving the productivity of water can make a major contribution to reducing poverty and improving peoples’ lives. IWMI's work explores ways to help alleviate poverty, protect and conserve the environment, maintain food security, and provide poor and disadvantaged people better access to water resources.

IWMI is supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Founded in 1984, IWMI's headquarters are located in Sri Lanka. IWMI has residential offices in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Turkey, and Mexico.
