Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement

       


         
    Mission   Cirad has a mandate to contribute to rural development in tropical and subtropical countries through: research, experimentation, training operations in France and abroad, and scientific and technical information. Its operations include agronomic, veterinary, forestry and agrifood research.
         
    Description   Wih a staff of 1800 persons posted in 50 countries, Cirad has established international cooperation links with over 90 countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific region, Latin America and Europe.

28 research programmes are ongoing, within the following 7 departments of Cirad:

  • Annual Crops
  • Tree Crops
  • Fruit and Horticultural Crops
  • Animal Production and Veterinary Medicine
  • Forestry
  • Territories, Environments and People
  • Advanced Methods for Innovation in Science

One of the programmes of the Territories, Environments and People department is the programme "Savannah and irrigated systems". This programme conducts research on irrigated systems in West Africa.
The main research and development orientations are:

  • rice production intensification,
  • diversification of animal and crop production systems,
  • soils degradation,
  • irrigation technical management and social organisation.
